Dual N-Back 1.7.0: Guess Feedback
October 1, 2026 — Dual N-Back 1.7.0 is live on iOS and Android with Guess Feedback, a new setting that tells you the instant a guess is right or wrong.
Why we built it
Players told us misses were a mystery until the end-of-round score screen. By then the round had moved on and the moment was gone. A player raised it directly in our issue tracker: without feedback in the moment, it was hard to tell whether a wrong guess came from a lapse in attention or a genuine memory miss. Guess Feedback closes that loop.
What changed
- Guess Feedback: the button you tap glows green for a correct match and red for a miss, right as you press it
- It only reacts to real guesses, so letting a square pass gives nothing away
- On by default; one switch in Settings turns it off if you prefer training blind
Working-memory training runs on a tight feedback loop. Now you learn the pattern by playing instead of by reading the instructions afterward.
How dual n-back training works
Dual n-back asks you to track two streams of information at once, usually a position on a grid and a sound, and flag when either one matches what appeared a fixed number of steps back. That "n" is the dial: at n=2 you're holding two steps of history in mind at once; raise it and the load climbs fast. The task is simple to explain and genuinely hard to do well, which is exactly why it shows up so often in cognitive training research as a stand-in for working memory under load.
The catch with any memory drill is that you can drift through it without noticing you're drifting. A miss that only shows up on a score screen two minutes later doesn't teach you anything about which moment went wrong. Guess Feedback ties the signal to the action: tap, see the color, adjust on the very next trial instead of the next session.
